Description: Epidemiology is the study of the determinants and distribution of diseases and disorders in populations, not individuals, and can provide clues about a conditions underlying etiology. Numerous epidemiological studies have been conducted on the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD) over the last 30 years, establishing these are common disorders in the general population globally, impact negatively on quality of life and productivity, and overlap more than expected by chance suggesting they have a common underlying pathophysiology.
